Most treat it as a nuisance. A few treat it as something to deal with when they get around to it. Almost none treat it with the urgency it actually deserves.
It was the kind of mistake a first-time pool owner makes once. After a week of autumn rain, the cover had accumulated what looked like a manageable puddle in the centre. It didn't look serious. The pool was closed for the season, and there was no particular rush. By the time the cover was actually inspected up close, the standing water had been sitting for nearly two weeks. The centre had sagged significantly under the weight. The anchor clips on two sides had pulled partially free from their tracks. And when the cover was finally removed at spring opening, a portion of the murky, decomposed water that had been sitting on top spilled directly into the pool undoing several hundred dollars of winter chemistry treatment in one moment.
None of that was inevitable. All of it was preventable with a prompt, simple removal that would have taken less than twenty minutes.
The Two Ways Standing Water Damages Your Cover and Your Pool
Understanding why standing water on a pool cover needs to be addressed quickly rather than left until the next scheduled maintenance check comes down to two specific and progressive damage pathways.
The first is structural stress on the cover itself. Pool covers are designed to bear a distributed load across their surface, not a concentrated weight in the centre. Standing water, particularly after significant rainfall, can accumulate to a weight of hundreds of pounds in a substantial puddle. This weight creates a deep sag in the centre of the cover, pulling the edges inward and placing sustained stress on the anchor points, cover clips, water bags, and fastening hardware that hold the cover in position around the pool perimeter. Over time and in some cases, in a single heavy rain event, this stress causes anchor points to fail, cover edges to tear, and the fastening hardware to deform or pull free. Covers damaged by repeated standing water loads need replacing far sooner than covers that are maintained correctly.
The second is water contamination risk at spring opening. Standing water on a pool cover accumulates organic material rapidly decomposing leaves, dirt, pollen, bird droppings, insect debris, and whatever the wind carries across it. Left sitting for days or weeks, this water becomes a concentrated soup of organic contaminants and bacteria. When a cover loaded with standing water is removed, even carefully, some portion of that contaminated surface water typically finds its way into the pool. The result is a spring opening that begins with a contamination event rather than a clean start requiring additional chemistry, additional shock treatment, and additional service time to remediate.
Addressing standing water promptly eliminates both risks entirely. The cover remains in the correct position under distributed tension, and the surface water is gone before it has the opportunity to contaminate the pool it is designed to protect.
What You Actually Need to Remove It
The practical advantage of standing water removal without a pump is that the methods available use items almost every household already has. No specialist equipment is required. No service call is needed for a routine puddle removal. The three methods below; a garden hose siphon, a push broom sweep, and a rolled towel wick, cover the full range of standing water situations from significant accumulation to shallow residual puddles.
The method you choose depends on the volume of water, what you have available, and the specific characteristics of your cover and pool setup. In most cases, one of the three will be immediately applicable. In some cases, a combination of methods; sweeping to reduce volume first, then using a towel to address the residual produces the cleanest result.
Method One: The Garden Hose Siphon
For significant standing water, anything more than a shallow film across the cover surface; the garden hose siphon is the fastest and most effective removal method available without a pump. It uses nothing more than basic physics: gravity pulling water downhill through a continuous column of liquid once flow is established.
The principle is the same as the siphon that anyone who has ever drained a fish tank or moved fuel from a container will recognise. A column of water in a tube will continue to flow as long as the outlet end of the tube remains lower than the water surface at the inlet end, and as long as the tube remains full of water throughout its length.
How to Start a Siphon Correctly and Safely
Place one end of the garden hose in the standing water on the cover, positioned at the deepest point of the puddle to maximise the water available for the siphon to draw from. Feed the rest of the hose over the pool edge and extend the outlet end toward the ground or a drainage area away from the pool.
To start the flow, suction needs to be applied to the outlet end briefly to pull water through the hose until the column is full and gravity takes over. The correct technique is to place the outlet end to your mouth and apply suction, as you would with a straw but stop the moment you feel the water beginning to move. Do not allow the water to reach your mouth. Pool cover water is contaminated and should not be ingested under any circumstances.
Once flow begins and water is running freely from the outlet end, place the outlet end on the ground pointed away from the pool and allow gravity to continue the drainage. The siphon will run without further intervention until either the water level on the cover drops below the inlet end of the hose, or the outlet end is raised above the water surface on the cover.
For covers with a significant central sag, it may be necessary to reposition the inlet end of the hose as the water level drops to keep it submerged in the diminishing puddle. The process takes no active effort beyond the initial positioning; gravity does the work.
Method Two: The Push Broom Sweep
When a garden hose isn't available, a push broom is the next most effective method for removing standing water from a pool cover particularly for moderate volumes of water that can be moved toward the pool edges where the cover is designed to drain.
The technique is straightforward in principle but requires the right level of force. Starting from the centre of the cover where the water is deepest, push the broom head gently toward one edge, moving the water ahead of it in a controlled wave. Work in sections, pushing from the centre outward in the direction where the cover edges sit closest to the ground or where drainage is most accessible.
How to Use a Push Broom Without Damaging the Cover
The emphasis on gentleness in the push broom method is not a minor qualifier, it is the most important aspect of the technique. A pool cover is a relatively delicate membrane when subjected to friction and point load. Pushing too hard with a broom head doesn't move the water faster, it drags the cover material, stretches it across the pool edge, risks pulling the cover out of position, and over repeated sessions creates microscopic tears in the surface that develop into visible damage.
The correct motion is a smooth, moderate-pressure sweep that moves water ahead of the broom rather than pushing through it. Think of it as guiding the water rather than forcing it. The cover should not shift position significantly during the sweep. If the cover is moving, the force is too high.
Work methodically from the centre outward rather than trying to cover the whole surface in a single sweep. Multiple gentle passes produce a better result with less cover stress than a single aggressive one.
Method Three: The Rolled Towel Wick
For shallow residual puddles that don't have the volume to siphon effectively and are too thin for a broom sweep to collect, a rolled towel used as a wick provides a slow but reliable removal method.
Roll a standard bath towel or large absorbent cloth tightly into a cylinder. Lay one end of the rolled towel in the standing water at the centre of the puddle. Drape the other end over the pool edge and allow it to hang down toward the ground. The towel will draw moisture from the puddle through capillary action, the same mechanism by which a sponge absorbs liquid and transfer it over the pool edge where it drips away from the pool.
The towel wick method works best for puddles that are shallow and widespread rather than deep and contained. It is slower than either the siphon or the broom sweep, but it is effective for the residual water that remains after the other methods have removed the bulk. For small, standalone puddles that develop between rain events when only a modest amount of water has accumulated, a towel wick can handle the removal entirely on its own.
Replace or wring out the towel if it becomes fully saturated before the water is cleared. Multiple passes may be needed for larger residual areas.
What to Avoid Near a Pool Cover at All Costs
Two specific risks deserve explicit mention because they are the causes of cover damage that shows up on service calls with a regularity that suggests they are common rather than exceptional.
Sharp tools should never be brought near a pool cover under any circumstances. The temptation to use a knife, screwdriver, or garden stake to prod the cover or create a drainage point in a heavy puddle is understandable but produces irreversible damage. A single puncture in a pool cover creates a tear point that propagates under load and renders the cover progressively less effective at protecting the pool. There is no repair for a punctured cover that restores it to original integrity.
Standing water should never be allowed to accumulate and remain over extended periods. Rain events that deposit significant water on a cover are not infrequent during autumn and winter in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. A routine check takes less than two minutes, a visual inspection from the pool perimeter to identify any sagging that indicates accumulated water. Caught early, the water is easy to remove. Left for a week, it can become the kind of structural and contamination problem that turns a simple cover maintenance step into a full-service issue.
