If everything is at the same potential, there is no difference for current to chase and no reason for it to travel through a swimmer bridging the water and a metal rail. Bonding does not remove electricity from the equation. It removes the voltage difference that turns electricity into a shock.


WHAT GROUNDING ACTUALLY DOES

Grounding is the second protection, and it does a different job. Grounding connects your pool's electrical equipment back to the earth and to your electrical panel, giving a serious electrical fault a safe, direct path to follow. When a fault occurs, that path lets the current rush to ground and trips the breaker or the ground-fault interrupter, cutting power to the failing component.


In plain terms, grounding is what shuts the power off when something goes badly wrong. It protects the equipment and clears major faults quickly, before they can build into something worse.


WHY BONDING AND GROUNDING ARE NOT THE SAME THING

Here is the distinction that even many pool owners who have heard both words never quite grasp and it matters enormously. Grounding only works when a fault is large enough to trip a breaker. Bonding protects you from the faults that are not.


Picture an aging pool light with slightly deteriorated internal wiring. It can leak a small amount of stray voltage into the water while still working perfectly and never drawing enough current to trip anything. The breaker stays on. The interrupter never fires.
